It's harder than they explain here. Traditionally in Africa, if you are deformed in some way, many - if not most - tribes believe that you did something bad in a past life to deserve it and you will be shunned. So she is going against both Western cultural norms, which have been widely adopted, but also deep seated tribal customs which persist. This is such a sweet story. I think they would do well to emigrate to a Western European nation to live. In the Netherlands, for instance, they will find economic support and culturally enlightened friends to accept them. They must feel very lonley in Namibia!
